It is difficult to find the exact date of establishment of Troop 78, but history does give clues. Thankfully, Mr. Bill Scanlon was able to speak with Mr. John Begovich and find out some details before he passed. Mr. Begovich stated that the Troop was operating prior to the Amador District being established. The Troop operated until all the men left Jackson for World War II. It’s believed the only person left in the Jackson Troop was Bud Koncka.
According to the Amador District history, we do know that prior to 1937, the Golden Empire Council had informally utilized geographic groupings which were also titled districts, but they were not formally designed or organized. The Council’s Annual Report for 1928 listed Amador as one of eleven districts.
In 1937, the Golden Empire council was formally subdivided into smaller geographic units called “districts”, in order to enhance administration of the Boy Scout program. The Amador and El Dorado districts have existed in the council from 1937 until present day. The other nine units are no longer existing.
So, it’s safe to say the Jackson Boy Scout Troop was operating before 1937. Wow…how time flies!
